Mount TBR Reading Challenge 2012

You know that huge pile of books you’ve been saying you’re going to read for ages?  Yeah, me too.  Except I have shelves and shelves of books to-be-read, not mere piles.  This challenge can help us work on decreasing this pile.  Check out this post at My Readers Block for the full details.

The rules are simple.  You must commit to a certain mountain peak level of reading.  You CANNOT step-down from this level after committing, but you can climb a higher mountain if you overachieve – so only sign up for what you can accomplish!

The levels are:
Pike’s Peak: Read 12 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Vancouver: Read 25 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Ararat: Read 40 books from your TBR piles/s
Mt. Kilimanjaro: Read 50 books from your TBR pile/s
El Toro: Read 75 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Everest: Read 100+ books from your TBR pile/s

Each TBR book must be on your shelf before January 1st, 2012.  This is great for me since I’m asking for a lot of books for Christmas, but I’m also asking for some books for my birthday – January 7th – so those won’t count.

If you’re interested in signing up for this challenge you must do so by November 30, 2012.

I’m pledging to climb Mt. Vancouver and read 25 books from my TBR pile. If I do really well I might step-up and try to tackle Mt. Ararat and read 40 books, but I’m not sure if school will allow that – so we’ll see!

My only problem with this is that my TBR pile isn’t really that huge. As of now my TBR pile is only 15-20 books. What I tend to do is buy a bunch of books to get my pile up to 25-ish books, read until it’s down to about 10 or so books, then go out and buy another 10 books or so. What ends up happening is that my TBR pile never really gets any smaller.

For me the true TBR stack challenge would be to go through everything in the TBR pile so that I don’t have one. Sadly, even making a concentrated effort to do that I would probably still screw it up by constantly buying new books.

My TBR has had a similar trend with recently bought books, but I still have a chunk of books from a HUGE buying spree a few years ago that I haven’t worked on. I’m going to really try to make myself narrow this pile down a bit by doing this challenge. New books are just so tempting!

I have some books in my TBR pile. The problem is I can only get first hand books here( I haven’t found a library or a second hand bookshop with english books in this city yet!) so my limit is to buy one or two books a month; Which means I cant get all the books i want by Jan 1st.

Ah, yeah. There’s always the problem of money…I have a book-buying addiction which is why my TBR pile is so big in the first place. Good luck finding a secondhand bookshop or library!

  3. Welcome to the Challenge! So glad you’ll be joining us.

  4. This challenge looks fun! I think I have the same problem as a bunch of you guys, my pile never shrinks because I buy or borrow from the library more books that just get added to the pile. I never seem to conquer it. It’s such an amazing problem to have :)

Sounds like a good idea – most of my reading is done just before bed and I can only really read novels (and the occasional biography) right before sleeping. Most of the books in my TBR pile (which has 46 books in it) are books which surround my subject of work. I really need to be more disciplined at other times of the day to get through these!

I joined this one too, and was surprised by the size of my TBR pile! I had to go around the house and collect for it. I took a picture, but then I found more. It’s about time I tackled this project…:)

Wow – nice pile :P I think mine is probably bigger though…It’s a huge problem. I’m away at college so I can’t look for them all right now, but I know I have a TON of books lying around at home too. Plus, I’ve given my parents a big list of books that I’d like for Christmas and my birthday. If I get ones for my birthday they will be just after the challenge starts though (January 7) so I won’t count them toward the TBR challenge.

Probably your pile IS bigger–I’m a librarian and try to buy books as rarely as possible. I’m very good at getting things through InterLibrary Loan. OTOH, I didn’t put the entire 10-volume set of the Durants’ world history series on the pile!

Ooh, lucky you! Sounds like we both have plenty of books to do the challenge though.
